What might a blessing truly be? Often it is construed as some supernatural help, but suppose we don’t particularly feel attuned to aid from beyond. What may a blessing be for us then? Might a blessing be something more fundamental; a swell of love, connection, and support that rises around us through the goodwill common to those who show up to break down injustice and build a better world from the ashes? As our faith found its feet amidst the Civil Rights movement and has continued to cultivate its identity amidst the work of liberation across a litany of causes, may we reflect this Sunday on the blessings of the liberators, the rabble rousers, and the justice makers that shape our faith and usher us step by step through the ashes and towards a promised land on the far horizon.
