All Souls & La Santa Muerte
November 2nd marks All Souls Day in the liturgical calendar of some Christian communities, and in many parts of Central America and throughout the Mexican diaspora it also coincides with the observance of El Dia De Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. Cemeteries come alive with marigold wreaths and ofrendas in order to honor and appease the spirits of the departed.
In recent history, as this celebration has grown, another figure has gained increasing prominence amidst this observation, La Santa Muerte, the folk saint of Holy Death. While loudly denounced by Catholic leaders, she has nonetheless become a mainstay in the everyday religious life of over 10 million people across Mexico, the United States, and Central America.
This Sunday, let us explore this canonization of Holy Death, exploring the interweavings of culture that brought The Skinny Lady into being and examining the narratives of death and ancestry that loom large in our own cultural conditions and personal experiences.
