Love At The Center: Something New, Something Wild, Something Beautiful

While other languages may carry various terms to define the particulates of Love, here in the English speaking west we have just the one word; one which has been pecked at by the vultures of culture for as long as folks have had a longing in their hearts, change in their pockets, and a desire for connection.

In these cultures of consumerism that dominate the day, Love may seem cheapened, like the cardboard of a Hallmark card; all beet red, bleeding hearts and candy coated sentimentality. Even as it is commodified and made for sale, Love feels scarce; as if we are thirsty in a rainstorm.  We swipe left and right in a pandemic of loneliness, too often estranged from one another, too often groping in the dark for something that approximates Love, lest we be undone by the demands of the day and the manifold demons that dance on our backs. We want it desperately, but we don’t seem to have a clear grasp on what it actually is that we want. Perhaps what we want is to belong somewhere, to something. We long to let go and be held by something bigger. A lover. A community. An ultimate truth.

This Sunday, let us seek such a bigger container, one capable of honoring the pluralistic reality of our being while held in the bonds of such pluralistic belonging. Rev. Juniper will be sharing her chapter from the book “Love At The Center” published last year by Skinner House.
