“I am because we are”

Such is how the late Anglican Archbishop of South Africa, Desmond Tutu, described his theology and defined the concept of Ubuntu; a term from the Nguni Bantu languages of southern Africa, meaning something like “humanity” or “humanness”.

From whence does our worth and dignity, our very humanity arise? Is it simply the condition of our individual nature or is something more at play? This Sunday, as we deepen our explorations of our value of Interdependence, let us lift up this theological jewel that calls all souls into the commons of life that we may discern one another’s humanity and define our own.
