As a proud atheist, I was leery when a friend told me she found a church that I might
like. She assured me I would not hear anything about father, son, or holy ghost. She
was right. On my first visit to Second Unitarian the topic was Evolution!
That day the Library Committee needed volunteers to shelve books. I also learned
about the Social Justice Committee. The clouds had opened to my definition of
heaven.
Over the years I’ve helped raise Nebraska’s minimum wage, support rights to
abortion, bear witness at Arizona’s tent city jail, testify at local hearings — and set up
a well-stocked church library of humanism, world religions, environment/climate
justice, and Unitarian Universalism.
I’m so grateful to have found friends with loving and peaceful hearts, open arms,
caring hands, thinking and questioning minds, and the moral commitment that every
person is inherently worthy.
