Always be on the lookout for email and text scams that appear to be from Rev. Juniper or the board asking for “a favor.” or asking for you to send a copy of the directory. If one were to reply to that message, they would eventually be asked for a gift card.
Rev. Juniper will NEVER send an email asking you for a gift card. Rev. Juniper has a discretionary fund to help out folks, she uses this fund if someone is in need of support.
Here are a few things to look for:
- First off, hover over the person’s name in the “from” line. An unfamiliar email address will pop up. However, this can be extra tricky because some scammers use gmail accounts.
- Does the language seem a little awkward? Common spam signifiers used to be poor grammar and spelling, generic greetings, unsolicited attachments, and requests for personal information or urgent action. However, scam are getting more sophisticated.
- And finally, what does the sign off say? Does it sound like your friend? For example, I will never sign off an email with something like “God’s Blessings to you…” or “Best regards”.
It is wise to have our guard up. It’s absolutely okay to be “unhelpful” to those who may possibly be trying to take advantage of us. But please do not let bad actors take away your joy or cause you to lose faith in the goodness that resides in the vast majority of people!
Scam emails and texts are disheartening and frustrating and can appear to come from any organization … even churches!
