For the third year in a row, Second Unitarian has been hard at work renewing our status as a Welcoming Congregation for LGBTQ+ people. In January 2025, we received word that the UUA has granted us this status for the year 2023-24 thanks to our “ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ welcome and inclusion in and beyond Omaha.”
Rev. Michael J. Crumpler, LGBTQ and Multicultural Programs Director for the UUA, notified Welcoming Congregation chair Tera Kirk that “It was a pleasure to read about all you have accomplished and the powerful work you have done to ensure that [the Second Unitarian Church of Omaha] is meeting the needs of queer and trans congregants and the wider community.”
Since our Welcoming Congregation status is current, members will be given a special ribbon to wear at General Assembly next year.
The steps involved in our Welcoming Congregation renewal were:

- Second Unitarian Pride: Pride in Ourselves, Our Community and Our History
- Lord of the Butterflies: The Life of Andrea Gibson

- Transgender Day of Remembrance
