August’s Share the Plate recipient is the Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity of Omaha is a grassroots organization that builds and renovates houses, forges community partnerships and breaks down barriers to home ownership. It eliminates vacant lots and abandoned homes in the blighted areas of North and South Omaha while improving the overall appearance of our community. Families in Habitat’s Homeownership Program are required to complete up to 350 hours of sweat equity before purchasing their homes through 20 or 30-year affordable mortgages. Habitat for Humanity of Omaha recently expanded to include Sarpy County.
Since 1984 Habitat for Humanity Omaha has served more than 1,800 families and individuals through homeownership, home repairs and neighborhood revitalization efforts. It operates two Habitat ReStore home improvement outlets that sell new and used, donated materials at greatly reduced prices. Through the Deconstruction Program, its teams salvage quality, reusable materials from renovations and demolitions, and provides opportunities for the public to purchase reclaimed items. It relies on volunteers for much of the construction and renovation work, and welcomes volunteers from all faiths (or no faith) who actively embrace Habitat for Humanity’s goal of helping families build wealth through home ownership.
