The Share the Plate organization for April is the Heartland Workers Center. The Heartland Workers Center (HWC) was founded in 2009 after listening to hundreds of stories from workers in meatpacking, construction, restaurants, and cleaning. A vision was born to create a new model of organizing that entails finding and developing leaders, training them on workers’ rights, and developing effective methods of participating in the civic society.

The HWC focuses its work on three principle goals:

• Find, train, and develop Latino leaders from various demographic backgrounds (ethnicity, age, sex, educational background, etc.) in the Omaha-metropolitan area and certain rural communities in Nebraska to have the skills necessary to identify and address issues facing them in their respective communities
• Promote and defend workers rights through education by providing bilingual trainings through the HWC Health and Safety Training Institute and advocating for improved labor laws for workers; and
• Increase civic participation among Latinos by providing opportunities for Latino leaders to effectively advocate on issues important to them, their families, and their community, and conducting Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) campaigns to increase voter participation during election cycles.
